SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly session was adjourned sine die after the Opposition continued to disrupt it over the death of a National Conference worker. According to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Yusuf was handed over to the police after he admitted to illegally collecting money from people who were promised favours from the government and died after he suffered a heart attack.
Opposition PDP remained adamant that it be permitted to make a statement on the issue but the Speaker rejected the adjournment motion. Other opposition leaders alleged the House was held hostage by NC, Congress and PDP, preventing them from raising issues and transacting business beneficial to the people.
"For the first time in my political career, I did not get even a single opportunity to intervene on any issue," Panthers Party leader Harsh Dev Singh said. "Not a single question of mine could be taken up." "We had come with issues of the people but the house remained hostage to the parties for one or the other reason," Singh's colleague Balwant S Mankotia said. BJP's Ashok Khajuria accused PDP of helping the coalition by suppressing raising of issues related to governance.
"I am not supporting the (main) opposition, but the issue is so sensitive that it merits a debate in the House," said CPM MLA Yousuf Tarigami. He said if this case is not debated in the Assembly, where else could lawmakers go?
