Rahul Gandhi in radio-taxi with vehicles in tow

NEW DELHI: After generating much media hype by travelling in a Mumbai local train last year, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi replicated the 'aam aadmi' feat in the Capital on Tuesday by skipping his mandatory SPG carcade for a ride on the Delhi Metro as well as a radio-taxi. He used the twin means of public transport to reach a Youth Congress event in Rohini.

Gandhi, according to agency reports, boarded the Metro from Race Course Station, next to his official resident at Tughlaq Road, for Rohini's West station. After coming out of the Rohini metro station, he hailed a radio-cab for his onward travel to Japanese Park, where he was to address activists of the Youth Congress. Gandhi is said to have paid 200 to cab driver Shravan for the nearly three-kilometer ride to Japanese Park.

Gandhi is one of the most protected persons in the country and his security detail is handled exclusively by the Special Protection Group, which also protects the Prime Minister. SPG personnel who protect VIPs in plain clothes were present throughout his ride on the Metro. Several SPG vehicles, including Gandhi's own designated vehicle, travelled along side the radio cab as it took Rahul to the Japanese Park.
