David Warner's murderous hundred thrust New South Wales into the semifinals of the Champions League T20 following a 46-run win over defending champion Chennai Super Kings at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, here on Tuesday.

The defeat sent Super Kings hurtling out of the tournament with three losses in four games. Although Trinidad & Tobago's thrilling two-wicket triumph over Cape Cobras in the afternoon fixture handed the home side a few straws to clutch at, the daunting 202 it was set by NSW — to be chased down in 17 overs for a semifinal berth — proved to be an impossible ask.

Brisk start

Michael Hussey (37, 27b, 7x4) and M. Vijay got the home team off to a brisk start, gathering 49 in the first six overs. But the need of the hour — the fulfilment of a sky-high asking rate — soon warranted desperate measures. A procession of wickets resulted: Hussey was trapped in front by Stuart Clark, Vijay was castled by left-arm spinner Steve O'Keefe in the next over, and when Suresh Raina (28, 14b, 5x4, 1x6) and M.S. Dhoni exited on the same score, the home team was 88 for four in the 11th over — not a bad scenario per se, but woefully short of the implausible task at hand.

Wickets continued to tumble as Dwayne Bravo, Wriddhiman Saha and S. Badrinath departed within eight runs of each other. Chennai's innings wound up on 155 in the 19th over when left-arm quick Mitchell Starc caught Doug Bollinger off his own bowling to end the match, leaving New South Wales (6 points) and Mumbai Indians (5 points) the two semifinalists from Group ‘A'.
