Imphal: Manipur has almost been brought to standstill and has been so for the last two months. Two national highways have been blocked for 62 days over the demand for a separate hill district. The average Manipuri is facing an acute shortage of fuel and essential items. Petrol now costs Rs 140 per litre and a gas cylinder has been selling for Rs 2000.
Manipur capital Imphal has been witnessing never ending queues day and night for the last two months.
Petrol is in short supply and is sometimes distributed under the watchful eyes of the police.
The spiralling prices are a result of the blockade of the state's two crucial highways 39 and 53 by tribal groups as the Kukis are demanding a separate Sadar Hills district, while the Nagas are refusing to give up their land for it.
Neither group has relented for the last 61 days and Imphal has been paying the price.
The price of potato has gone upto Rs 45 per kg, the price of dal is at Rs 80.
Not just that, medicines and oxygen cylinders are in short supply. Most private hospitals in Imphal are now refusing to do any critical surgeries.
Agitators have also attacked and set fire to atleast 18 vehicles that have tried to ply on the highways.
The state government has held more than five Cabinet meetings but hasn't been able to bridge divide. Meanwhile, New Delhi has remained a mute spectator and many are now asking for immediate central intervention.
